Hey guys, as you probably already know if you have been reading this forum lately, I have both the Savage and the Sportster (01 883). From time to time, someone will come to this site and post negative inputs (usually insulting) about the Savage that we owners know are false. Let's not unfairly bash the Sportster either. The Sportster is an almost 900cc v-twin motorcycle capable of just over 100mph. With the proper set-up (exhuast, air filter, jetting) she pulls pretty good between sixty and eighty. I just got of a 300 mile weekend ride. The bike is capable of open road touring. As far as the chrome goes, HD does a pretty good job there. They'd better for the prices they charge. Just because the Sportster is the smallest bike HD makes doesn't make it a beginners bike. In fact I would rather own a Sporty than one of those overweight, overpriced big twins any day. The Sporty is a lean, no-extra frills good handling bike like the Savage. The difference being the motor whick is way-under powered stock but with a few mods (around 300$) can bost HP to over 50hp. For around 1200$ you can boost the power to almost 70hp and not even compromise reliability. The Savage and the Sportster both have identity problems in the motorcycling community. Too many riders dismiss them because of stereotyping by some people with fat wallets as not good enouph because they aren't top dollar bikes. Some of us don't need or want the hottest garage looker. We like simplicity and we like to ride our bikes. And, if you think this site is pretty good, the sportster.org home page has about 2000 listers and it's own race team. Sorry for rant. Ride safe.
